Galeries Lafayette wins best international retailer of the year

French department store retailer Galeries Lafayette was named the Best International Retailer of the Year by the National Retail Federation at the Retail’s Big Show 2015.

The accolade is given to a company that has achieved retail excellence in its native country as well as internationally, was accepted by Galeries Lafayette’s executive chairman Philippe Houzé in New York.

On accepting the award, Houzé commented that he was “even more honoured” because his cousin and predecessor had received the same award in 1984.

The 120-year-old, family run business operates over 65 stores worldwide, including its iconic flagship on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris, as well as five flagships abroad in Beijing, Berlin, Casablanca, Dubai and Jakarta, and the department store chain is planning to open further locations in Milan, Doha and Istanbul by 2018.

Other winners at the NRF’s Retail’s Big Show were The Home Depot’s chairman, Frank Blake who was awarded the Gold Medal Award, for his leadership and innovation in the retail industry, and Warby Parker co-founders and co-CEOs David Gilboa and Neil Blumenthal were honoured with the Retail Innovator of the Year award reflecting the eyewear retailer’s rapid growth and use of innovative and imaginative techniques.
