The National Retail Federation (NRF) has revealed Phoenix Union High School District’s Trevor G. Browne High School as its 2022 Rise Up Partner of the Year.

The award, presented by Old Navy, recognises the Arizona-based school for its use of the foundation’s Rise Up training programme, developed to make a positive impact on individuals and communities.

Training from the NRF is offered at the school as part of its marketing programme, for which its students operate an on-campus store. Participants gain experience in a number of retail operations, including selecting products, setting prices and interacting with customers.

“Trevor G. Browne High School is a shining example of how to bring our retail skills training to life in engaging ways that empower people to build great careers,” said NRF Foundation’s executive director, Bill Thorne, in a statement. “The staff is dedicated to ensuring students get the experience and skills they need to thrive in their first roles and beyond.”

Often participants are hired by local retailers and at campus career fairs based on the Rise Up addition to their resume.

The school’s principal, Stephanie Street commented on the initiative: “Bringing in real-world learning opportunities and providing those connections between what students are learning in school to specific, tangible jobs and workforce opportunities really elevates opportunities for our students, and for our families in this community. It helps students build confidence in their future careers and even helps the families gain experiences as well.”

The Rise Up’s Partner of the Year will be honoured at the NRF Foundation’s event in New York, co-hosted by Macy’s, Inc.
