Japanese fashion retailer Uniqlo is set to open its first Canadian stores in Toronto in the autumn of 2016, as it pushes forward with its expansion plans to become the world’s top fashion retailer.

Canada will mark the brand’s 18th market, since it opened its first store in Japan in 1984, adding to its 1,500 stores worldwide. Fast Retailing, owner of Uniqlo, has stated that the two flagships will open in Toronto, with the aim of expanding its Canadian presence to Vancouver.

The flagships will be located at Yorkdale Shopping Centre, one of the highest performing shopping centres in North America and Toronto Eaton Centre, a historic landmark and one of Canada's best-known shopping destinations. The stores will span 24,000 square feet and 28,000 square feet respectively, and will offer the brand's full range of men's, women's and children's items.

"Entering the Canadian market is a milestone for the company and a significant step in our growth strategy," said Larry Meyer, CEO of Uniqlo USA and Canada. "Our first two stores in the great City of Toronto will mark the launch of the Uniqlo brand in Canada, which we aim to build upon thereafter with a presence in the lovely city of Vancouver."

Exact dates of the stores opening have not been announced, just that the Japanese clothing brand will open its first store in the country in autumn 2016.
