While New York Fashion Week may have just ended, and an entire fashion month still ahead on the fashion calendar with London, Milan, and Paris Fashion Week to follow, the CFDA has already given designers a reason to rejoice. They will be increasing their number of nominees in three categories for their designer of the year awards. Designer categories including womenswear, menswear, and accessories will now have five lucky potential winners instead of the usual three in the past.

Past winners of the prestigious awards have included the likes of Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan for womenswear, Joseph Abboud and Calvin Klein for menswear, and Manolo Blahnik and Tory Burch for accessories, just to name a few. While the competition may have become tougher, just to be nominated for the award is an honor, and will still garner you plenty of recognition in the fashion industry. It’s a one way ticket to getting noticed by all the major buyers of the top department stores, and all the top editors and stylists of every major fashion magazine.

The winners of the CFDA awards are decided by the CFDA Fashion Awards Guild which consists of 1500 of the top designers, editors, stylists, and photographers. Aside from increasing the number of nominees for their design categories, the CFDA has also adjusted the guidelines for the award for emerging talent, which will now be defined as a designer who has produced a collection for ten or less seasons or five years or less. Unfortunately, we have ways to go before the winners of the awards are revealed, as the CFDA celebration for the winners is not until June 1st at Alice Tulley Hall. This year, the event will also be done in collaboration with Swarovski, so mark your fashion calendars for a fashionable evening.
