US off-price retailer Ross Stores has announced that Norman Ferber, the former chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) who helped transform the business from a six-store chain into a major market player, passed away on January 23, 2026. Ferber was 77 years old and died following a brief illness.
Ferber joined Ross at its inception and was a central figure in establishing the strategic and operational foundations of the company. Throughout his tenure, he held various leadership positions including president, chief operating officer (COO), CEO, and chairman of the board. Even after stepping down from the role of CEO, Ferber remained an active advisor and board member for nearly 30 years.
Ross executive chairman Michael Balmuth stated that Ferber was an exceptional merchant and business leader whose insight and integrity influenced the company for decades. Balmuth noted that he benefited greatly from his wisdom and that Ferber would be deeply missed by the board of directors and associates.
Current CEO Jim Conroy noted that Ferber’s passion for the organisation and its employees has left an enduring legacy. To honour his commitment to the workforce, Ross has made a contribution to the Ross Cares Fund, an internal initiative designed to support employees during periods of hardship.
Beyond corporate operations, Ferber was known for his philanthropic work, particularly regarding the long-standing partnership between Ross and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. He was a frequent volunteer and donor at the Moldaw-Zaffaroni Clubhouse in East Palo Alto.
In recognition of these efforts, the Ross Stores Foundation has made a donation in his memory. The clubhouse has also named its main Art and Academic Room after Ferber, ensuring his focus on academic support and community development continues to be recognised within the regions the retailer serves.
