US retail giant Walmart has announced the appointment of Erin Nealy Cox as its next executive vice president of global governance, chief legal officer, and corporate secretary. Cox is scheduled to assume her new responsibilities on April 13, 2026.
The appointment comes as the company continues to manage a complex international regulatory landscape. Cox will oversee a broad portfolio within the global governance organization, which includes global legal, compliance, ethics, corporate governance, and digital citizenship. Her remit also extends to enterprise risk management, litigation, aviation, investigations, and corporate security.
“To lead global governance for a company of our scale and complexity, you need a leader who has thrived in the most demanding environments,” stated Walmart president and chief executive officer John Furner. Furner noted that Cox possesses a combination of legal strategy and operational rigor essential for the current era of retail.
Professional background and legal expertise
Cox joins the Bentonville-based retailer from the US law firm Kirkland & Ellis, where she has served as a partner in the government, regulatory and internal investigations practice group since 2021. Her career includes significant experience in the public sector, notably as the US attorney for the Northern District of Texas.
During her tenure as US attorney, Cox led federal investigations involving white-collar crime, national security, cybercrime, and public corruption. She also chaired the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee. Earlier in her career, she spent nearly 10 years as an assistant US attorney and served as an executive managing director at Stroz Friedberg, a global cybersecurity and risk management firm.
Cox holds a juris doctor from SMU Dedman School of Law and a bachelor of business administration in finance from the University of Texas at Austin. She expressed her commitment to the company’s mission, stating that she has found the best strategies are always rooted in purpose.
As the industry faces increasing scrutiny regarding data privacy and digital citizenship, the background Cox holds in cybersecurity is expected to be a strategic asset. She will be tasked with ensuring the company maintains its operational standards while navigating a volatile global market.
