Burberry marks 170th anniversary with outerwear portrait campaign
British luxury house Burberry has unveiled “170: The Anniversary Portraits”, a campaign that marks the brand's 170th anniversary through its outerwear. The campaign features 170 people photographed in London, New York, Seoul and Shanghai, each wearing one of ten Burberry outerwear styles.
The portraits were shot by photographer Jack Day, while Hector Aponysus directed the accompanying film. Chief creative officer Daniel Lee oversaw the creative direction, with Lane & Associates handling artistic direction.
The concept draws on Burberry's 2009 “Art of the Trench” campaign. Each person is photographed on the streets of their own city, a setup the brand says shows how the same garment changes character from one wearer to the next.
"For 170 years, our outerwear has adapted to the weather and the way we dress," said Lee. "Each portrait is different, but together they capture individuality and self-expression."
Cast from four cities
Street-cast locals appear alongside figures from art, literature, sport and music. The line-up includes Seoul-based singer Crush; theatre director Jamie Lloyd; model Lila Moss; New York editor Lisa Love; footballer Nico O'Reilly; NBA player OG Anunoby; chef Ruthie Rogers; Shanghai ballet artist Tan Yuanyuan; director Xin Shuang; and athlete Yeonkoung Kim.
The cast also includes long-standing Burberry employees across all four cities, from the brand's archive team in London to store, planning and merchandising staff in Seoul, Shanghai and New York.
Ten outerwear styles
The campaign centres on ten designs across four categories. Two long trench coats represent the Heritage Collection: the structured Kensington with set-in sleeves, and the softer Waterloo, cut to a classic fit with raglan shoulders. For men, the mid-length Camden car coat is single-breasted with concealed buttons.
The trench also appears in new materials. The Kensington trench jacket comes in burgundy nappa leather, while a long cashmere version of the Kensington coat is designed for insulation. Menswear includes the mid-length Hastings trench coat in brushed grey mélange cashmere, and womenswear adds a cashmere cape with a shearling collar, lined in the brand's House Check.
Two puffer jackets carry the check into technical outerwear. The men's Highlands puffer is made in glossy nylon with a tonal check woven into the fabric and a funnel neck, while the women's Ambleside puffer comes in yarn-beige House Check with black zip taping. Both are filled with goose down and feathers and have packaway hoods.
Quilted pieces inspired by British countryside dressing complete the line-up. The Rosedale coat in quilted nylon has a shearling collar and a check pattern traced through its stitching, while the men's Brighton overshirt in shale-green nylon reverses to House Check.
