J.Crew has launched what it calls its most ambitious portrait campaign to date, marking 40 years of the barn jacket with 160 people photographed across New York, Los Angeles, Austin, Boston and Chicago. Shot by Robert Nethery in a direct portrait style, the campaign mixes open-cast discoveries with athletes, musicians, designers and recognisable names including Spike Lee, Chance the Rapper, Amandla Stenberg, Bowen Yang, Scottie Pippen, Aly Raisman, Vince Staples, Hari Nef, Dave Franco, Jenny Slate and Leandra Medine. Collective films bring the cast into conversation about personal style and the character of each city.

"The scale of this campaign is extraordinary, but its power comes from the individuality within it," said Julia Collier, chief marketing officer of J.Crew, in a statement. "We brought together 160 people across five cities to show how one iconic piece can take on an entirely different life through every person who wears it. For 40 years, the Barn Jacket has moved across wardrobes, generations and communities without ever feeling fixed in one place or moment."

The 2026 barn jacket introduces a new proportion, and the season's assortment runs to 29 styles across women's, men's and kids, from the signature cotton canvas to new fabrications, finishes and embellished versions. Prices run from 98 to 898 dollars, with the collection available at jcrew.com and in selected stores.

"The shape is timeless, but it takes on a completely different personality depending on who is wearing it and how they style it. It can feel polished, rugged, feminine, oversized, familiar or unexpected," said Olympia Gayot, creative director of women's and kids at J.Crew.

The campaign extends a strategy the brand began with The Next Rollneck Generation in fall 2025, treating individual heritage products as platforms for both product development and cultural marketing rather than running seasonal brand campaigns. The barn jacket, introduced in 1986, is a logical second subject: a cropped version of the original 1980s cut has already been one of the brand's stronger sellers in recent years.

It also arrives at a point where J.Crew has something to celebrate commercially. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2020 and emerged under the ownership of Anchorage Capital Group and Leonard Green & Partners, with Libby Wadle appointed chief executive officer that November. J.Crew Group, which also owns J.Crew Factory and Madewell, approached a record three billion dollars in sales in 2024, driven in large part by a creative reset under Gayot and menswear creative director Brendon Babenzien and by moves that traded on the brand's archive, including the revival of the printed catalogue. Wadle told Bloomberg in 2025 that the company was not preparing itself for a sale.
