The catwalk circus of women's wear has come to an end in New York, otherwise known as the Big Apple, where most of the industry's commercial trends for the next season to come are born. Although most designers are not afraid to be more experimental in New York, they tend to lean towards presenting collections which are actually wearable for their customers. Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham and Jason Wu, one by one all claim that listening carefully to their core customers needs is what is most important to them when it comes to designing their collections.
1. Outstanding Outerwear
No collection can be complete without the inclusion of a striking overcoat. Outerwear rules. Fashion journalist Nicole Phelps states: "Every New Yorker needs a strong overcoat. Not just to stay warm, to offer protection from the bleak weather but because you never know when you may encounter someone on the street and then the coat is the garment that people will see and that should make a statement." The winter overcoat for next season remains oversized, but with more details, richly decorated and more colorful than before, with hints of fur detailing.
2. All Black
Black has notoriously always been the color of winter and is the most popular fashion color, so it fairly certain that the color will pop up in most Autumn/Winter collections. But this coming winter will see black prevailing more than usual over most winter tones. Alexander Wang's winter collection however is the creme de la crop when it comes to blackness, with the entire collection enveloped in darkness. Why? Because the customer asks for it, according to Wang. Donna Karan also used color very sparingly in its collection, with black being the dominant color, and the same applies to labels such as Tom Brown and The Row.
3. Strong Accessories
Nowadays the presentation of a new collection does not solely revolve around the new outfits being shown. The sale of shoes and handbags can also make a big impact on the profitability of a fashion label. The new-it bag is from Joseph Altuzarra, partly thanks to the investment the label received from luxury conglomerate Kering. His long, laced boots with just a hint of lace peeking out where also a hit amongst the audience present at his show. The handbags from Elizabeth and James, from the Olsen sister also received high praise.</p>
4. High-Necked Blouses
Silk blouses with bows and turtleneck blouses with lace collars that creep up the neck where seen making their ways across the catwalks. The blouse is well and alive in New York in numerous forms: from a somewhat frumpy but o so American look at Kate Spade New York to the artistically knotted version seen at Jason W to the romantic lace collar seen at Rodarte.
5. Spacious, Wide and Long
Little leg on display paired with some cleavage was another trend seen on the American catwalks. Prude? A little, but you could also call it idiosyncratic. It is a soft and wearable and is all about the textures and tactile. It is a look for women who do not flaunt their curves, but instead choose to wear what they feel looks beautiful and comfortable to wear.
