How does one define accessible luxury? Within the world of luxury fashion, Black consumers are one of the largest demographics of consumers, yet they still must fight for representation within the fashion industry. That’s why it was revolutionary to see a mother/daughter Black-owned brand present at New York Fashion Week.

Dur Doux presented a collection titled Terre Et Eau, with the theme of following the journey of a mystical line where land merges with the sea forming a boundary between the two. The collection was very resort ready with beautiful tropical prints and radiant colors like green, orange, and yellow. Here, designers Cynthia Burt, the mother of the duo, and Najla A. Burt, the daughter of the duo, attempt to inspire us with what the world can be after we have emerged from the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Perhaps it’s time for that beach or resort vacation you’ve been meaning to take? If so, you can adorn yourself in one of Dur Doux’s orange tulle dresses or tropical print belted dressed. Let us not forget that we are in a new normal though, but the days of us sacrificing fashion for our homely sweatpants are over.

The collection used eco-friendly fabrications of cotton sateen, silks, rayons , and linen. Inspiration came from an upscale, relaxed coastal aesthetic. Pieces included tops, skirts, pants, jackets, dusters, and dresses combined with tulle. The color palette included hues of orange, calming blues, plant-based greens, creamy shades of butter, and earth tone browns.
