Korean lifestyle retailer Artbox launches first direct US activation in Los Angeles
South Korean design-lifestyle retail brand Artbox has officially initiated its expansion into the US market with its first directly operated retail activation in Los Angeles, California. Running from October 3 through October 11, 2026, the nine-day temporary space located at 8250 Melrose Avenue signals the company's intent to establish a permanent brick and mortar presence in North America.
Founded in Seoul, South Korea, in 1984, the business has grown over four decades from a stationery vendor into a major retail player. Artbox currently operates 222 stores across South Korea and manages more than 20,000 active SKUs across eight commercial categories, including character goods, stationery, home and living, beauty, fashion, gifts, digital accessories, and food.
"Los Angeles is a natural starting point for Artbox's US journey, bringing together culture, creativity and diverse communities," said Artbox head of global business Kevin Cho. "This pop-up marks an exciting first step as we introduce Artbox's unique take on Korean lifestyle retail to US consumers".
Strategic expansion targeting Gen Z and K-culture growth
The company’s debut on Melrose Avenue is structured around experiential retail and intellectual property. To mark the launch, South Korean brand ambassador and K-pop group Illit participated in opening ceremonies on October 3, aligning Artbox with popular cultural properties that resonate strongly with Gen Z and Millennial demographics in the US.
The temporary store layout features interactive retail zones, including original character product displays, a customization area for personalization, and immersive visual installations featuring proprietary character intellectual property such as Lazywag. The venue is curated to offer an experiential path lasting approximately 40 to 45 minutes, emphasizing visual engagement and product discovery over traditional shelf merchandising.
The activation comes as South Korean lifestyle, beauty, and fashion concepts gain significant momentum across global consumer markets. Southern California serves as the primary test market for the brand’s prospective expansion across the country.
Artbox is using the activation to gather consumer insights and evaluate location strategy as it actively explores long-term real estate options with commercial landlords and development partners across the US.
