What Adidas, Chanel and Moncler need to sell to pay rent on the world's most expensive shopping streets

London - Manhattan's Upper 5th Avenue has claimed the title as the world's most expensive shopping street - at least when it comes to paying rent that is. Retail space on this prestigious shopping streets costs a whopping 3,000 dollars (2,408 pounds) per square foot annually according to the latest edition of Cushman & Wakefield's global flagship Main Streets Across the World 2016/2017. Surprisingly nearly all of the high streets rents mention reported a decrease in annual rent, reflecting the turbulent political and economical times faced by retailers across the globe.
However, in spite of the rent decrease, FashionUnited asked, what do retailers operating on the world's most expensive shopping streets have to sell each day to cover the annual rent of their stores? Scroll down to see our results.
1. Upper 5th Avenue, Manhattan - Home to Tiffany's
Tiffany's store on 5th Avenue spans 45,500 square feet. Rent per square foot here has dropped to 3,000 dollars (2,408 pounds) annually, which means Tiffany's total annual rent comes to 136 million dollars. In order to cover their rent, the jeweller would have to see 170 T rings retailing for 2,200 dollars each day.
2. Causeway Bay, Hong Kong - Home to Adidas
Adidas operates a 3,000 square foot store here, paying on average 2,878 dollars (2,311 pounds) per square foot each year. In order to pay it total annual rent of 8,6 million dollars (6,9 million pounds), the sportswear retailers needs to sell 296 pairs of Gazelle sneakers each day, retailing at 80 dollars (74,95 pounds) per pair.
3. Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong - Home to Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton has a 18,800 square foot store on Tsim Sha Tsui, for which is pays an annual rent of 2,714 dollars per square foot (2,178 pounds). To cover its annual rent of 51 million dollars (39 million pounds) Louis Vuitton has to sell 135 Speedy 30s every day, which sell for 1,038 dollars (833 pounds) per bag.
4. Times Square, New York City - Home to Levi's
Levi's owns a 6,500 square foot store here for which is has to pay an annual rent of 2,000 dollars per square foot. This means that in order to cover its annual rent of 13 million dollars (10,4 million pounds) Levi's has to sell 595 pairs of its 501 jeans each day, which sell for 59,90 dollars (75 pounds) a pair.
5. Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Paris - Home to Louis Vuitton
Louis Vuitton owns a 19,375 square foot (1,800 square meter) flagship store on this famed street, for which it pays in average 1,368 dollars (1,303 pounds) per square foot annually, or 26 million dollars (20,5 million pounds) each year. To ensure its annual rent is covered Louis Vuitton would need to sell 86 Speedy 30 handbags every day, which retail for 970 dollars in Paris (695 pounds).
6. Madison Avenue, New York City - Home to Moncler
Moncler's debut flagship store on Madison Avenue spans 6,500 square feet for which is pays an average annual rent of 1,300 dollars per square foot (1,043 pounds). In order to cover its 8,45 million dollar rent, Moncler will have to sell at least 16 Vallier down coats every day, which retail for 1,4485 dollars (925 pounds).
7. New Bond Street, London - Home to Chanel
Chanel owns a 12,600 square foot (1,170 square meter) store here and pays on average 1,283 dollars (1,030 pounds) in annual rent per square foot. To ensure it can pay its annual rent of 16,1 million dollars (12,9 million pounds), Chanel would only have to sell 10 of its iconic 225 handbags each day, retailing at 4,900 dollars (3,990 pounds) per piece.
8. Ginza, Tokyo - Home to Chanel
Chanel runs a 14,000 square foot (1,300 square meter) flagship store here, paying 1,249 dollars (1,002 pounds) per square foot in rent. With its total annual rent coming to 17,4 million dollars (13,9 million pounds) Chanel needs to sell 11 225 handbags every day.
9. Via Monte Napoleone, Milan - Home to Moncler
Moncler flagship store in Milan spans 3,800 square feet (350 square meters), for which it pays 1,239 dollars (994 pounds) per square foot in rent each year. In order to pay it total annual rent of 4,7 million dollars (3,6 million pounds) per year Moncler has to sell 11 Vallier down coats each day.
10. Via dei Condotti, Rome - Home to Louis Vuitton
For Louis Vuitton store in Rome, which measures 12,900 square feet (1,200 square meters) the brand pays 1,135 dollars (911 pounds) per square foot per year. To cover its annual rent of 14,6 million dollars (11.7 million pounds) Louis Vuitton has to sell 48 Speedy's per day, at 970 dollars in Paris (695 pounds per bag).
