Madewell expands US retail footprint with three new store openings

Madewell is expanding its US retail footprint, as the lifestyle brand prepares to open three new stores in key markets this summer.
The first to open is Madewell's debut store in Sag Harbor, Long Island, which started welcoming customers on May 20. The opening builds on the success of the brand's 2024 pop-up with Goop. Located at 102 Main Street, the store features Madewell's women's collection and marks its fourth Long Island location.
The second location, in Greenwich, Connecticut, is set to open its doors on June 10 and will feature a new dual-concept from Madewell. The store, located at 171-173 Greenwich Avenue, marks the brand's third store in the area and will sit alongside its existing locations at Westport and Westfarms.
The third store to open will be in Bend, Oregon, and also sees Madewell debuting its first dual-concept store in the state. Located at 520 SW Powerhouse Drive, the new store is set to complement Madewell’s existing women's and men's standalone stores in Tigard's Bridgeport Village.
The renewed retail push comes years after Madewell opened its first men ’s-only stores in 2019. Madewell currently operates approximately 150 standalone stores across 40 states, and its retail growth has been modest at best in recent years. Madewell's store count only narrowly edges out sister brand J. Crew, which operates roughly 100 full-price stores and over 330 J. Crew Factory stores.
The brand once had its sights set on Wall Street, but reportedly shelved its plans after analysts pushed back, with some accusing J. Crew Group of inflating Madewell's worth. The infusion of cash from an IPO never came, and in 2020, the parent company filed for bankruptcy.
